To build or not to build?

We've been here in Rossland for just over 2 years now.  Initially, not sure if this would be a temporary situation or perhaps a place to put down roots.  Well, after 2 years of rental in a lovely apartment with incredible views, we started looking for a more permanent abode.  We have started to make friends, and it would be nice to be part of the community.

Should we get an apartment with secure covered parking?  That would be great, especially in a place where winter occupies half the months of the year.  No shoveling of the driveway in winter, no lawn to mow in summer.  But most condos here are expensive, being situated on the ski hill (read tourist/holiday accommodation) that is 5-10 minutes from the rest of Rossland, depending on how fast you drive.

Most permanent residents live in Upper or Lower Rossland.  Therefore, we decided to look at houses in Rossland.  It would be great to live in town.  We could walk to most places, and would be closer to friends.  But a lot of the houses are old, and expensive.  Most needed renovation.  If we had to renovate, why not build from scratch?  That means not working within the constraints of a built house.

Therefore, we decided to look at land.  The Iron Colt subdivision was our first choice but sadly, land there is expensive.  Prices of land in Redstone Resort are relatively affordable.  It is not as convenient as being right smack in Rossland but it's only a 5 minute drive up the highway, and it is walkable in summer via the wagon road.  So, we looked and looked...and we found a lot we like.
